Rain garden ideas
A rain garden is a gently sunken basin that catches roof and driveway runoff and lets it soak in, planted with moisture-loving native sedges, rushes, iris and ferns, fringed with wet-meadow perennials and ringed with river rock. It is infrastructure that happens to be beautiful.

How to get the look
- 1Site it at least ten feet from the house where the downspout water already runs, and dig a shallow basin.
- 2Plant the centre with species that take standing water for a day, and the rim with plants that like it damp.
- 3Ring it with river rock and cobble so the inflow does not erode the edge.
