Cottage garden ideas
The cottage garden is generous and slightly untidy on purpose. Roses, lavender, foxglove, peonies and daisies crowd together in layered borders, colours stay soft, and paths are narrow so the planting brushes past you. It is the style most people mean when they say they want flowers.

How to get the look
- 1Layer the border: tall spires at the back, mounding perennials in the middle, spillers over the edge.
- 2Mix in a repeat-flowering rose and lavender so there is always something in bloom from May to frost.
- 3Keep hard edges soft. Timber, brick or a low picket fence, and let plants lean over them.
