Woodland shade garden ideas
A woodland garden works with shade instead of fighting it. Ferns, hostas, astilbe and heuchera in drifts under a dappled canopy, a soft bark path, mossy stone, and flowers that come in spring before the leaves close over. Texture does the work colour does elsewhere.

How to get the look
- 1Limb up the trees to let dappled light through, then plant in the light that arrives.
- 2Mass shade perennials in drifts and repeat the same three or four across the whole space.
- 3Make the path soft: bark or stepping stones, never a bright straight line.
