Fire-wise landscaping ideas
Fire-wise landscaping is defensible space you can live with. The first five feet around the house stays a noncombustible apron of gravel or pavers with nothing planted in it; beyond that, low, widely spaced, well-watered plants separated by stone mulch and open lawn, trees limbed up and kept clear of the roof, and no bark mulch, junipers or continuous hedges near the walls.

How to get the look
- 1Clear the five-foot strip around the house completely and keep it gravel or paving.
- 2Space plants so they never touch, and choose low, fleshy-leaved species that stay green.
- 3Limb trees up and keep canopies apart and away from the roofline.
