Xeriscape ideas
Cold-hardy xeriscape is the water-wise style for the semi-arid West: drifts of blue avena grass, little bluestem and blue grama over crushed-granite mulch, with Russian sage, catmint, agastache, penstemon and yarrow for colour, a juniper, a mugo pine and three-leaf sumac for structure, and a cobble dry creek. No lawn, and no cactus or agave.

How to get the look
- 1Swap the lawn for crushed granite and plant in drifts straight into it.
- 2Use grasses for half the plants and the silver-leaved perennials for the colour.
- 3Add a dry creek of cobble where water already runs; it handles the storm and looks intended.
