Tuscan courtyard ideas
The Tuscan courtyard is formal geometry over decomposed granite: a low parterre hedge, a rhythm of columnar cypress, a grapevine pergola over the seating, sheared bay and lavender hedges, and big aged terracotta urns of citrus set out in matched pairs. Symmetry and repetition are the whole trick.

How to get the look
- 1Lay out the courtyard on a grid and plant in matched pairs on either side of the axis.
- 2Use columnar cypress or a local upright evergreen as the repeating vertical.
- 3Put the citrus and lemons in terracotta so they can come under cover where winters bite.
